Studies on Selenium have shown that areas and countries with low levels of this trace mineral in the soil or drinking water, have a higher mortality caused by cancer and heart disease!
Starting at the beginning of life, mother’s breast milk contains more selenium than baby formulas!
Babies who are bottle-fed may be deficient in Selenium and possibly more vulnerable to infection.
Selenium is an antioxidant, scavenging for free radicals in the body. It does this specifically with the help of vitamin E and possibly zinc.
According to the highly-recommended resource book “Prescription for Nutritional Healing” by Phyllis Bach:
“Selenium deficiency has been linked to cancer and heart disease. It has also been associated with exhaustion, growth-impairment, high-cholesterol levels, infections, liver impairment, lower cognitive function, pancreatic insufficiency, and… sterility.”
Also interesting is that Selenium is one of the essential nutrients in the function of our thyroid gland. The thyroid produces two main hormones T4 and T3. Almost 100% of T4 is produced by the thyroid; but when it comes to the production of T3, just 20% is made by the thyroid. The rest of T3 comes from T4 converting into T3. In order to make that work we need selenium. So, people dealing with thyroid issues may need selenium to feel better.
A possibly simple solution with many other benefits!
