Benefits Of Selenium And A Funny Story Behind It
By Jacobus Hollewijn
Your Daily Health Pearl Minute # 21
The following Health Pearl actually caused some, let’s say, misunderstanding amongst several radio listeners back in 1996. This was in large part do to my Dutch accent…
At the time I didn’t think about it of course, and I had a chuckle when this was brought to my attention by a panic phone call from the owner of the health food store I was managing at the time.
I do believe that one specific customer was yanking my boss’s chain a little bit just to get rise out of him.
Here is what I read on the air:
“A group of viruses, called the Coxsackie Viruses infected over 20 million Americans in 1994, causing diseases varying from common colds, sore throats, diarrhea, as well as diabetes, polio, meningitis, and inflammation of the heart muscle.
A viral immunologist has studied the effects of diet on the Coxsackie virus and he discovered that selenium deficiency caused this virus to mutate.
The trace mineral Selenium is a vital anti-oxidant especially when combined with Vitamin E. An adequate daily dosage is 200 Mcg.”
Well, you probably know which w-o-r-d caused the consternation?… To be honest, I’ve told the story many times throughout the years.
It doesn’t take away from the overall message, though, that Coxsackie or not… SELENIUM is very important for our health, including fighting viruses and helping our thyroid function at its best.
I have also learned that 200mcg may not be enough for everybody; up to 600mcg is considered safe.
I hope you enjoyed this story!
