DHEA is called the mother hormone. DHEA is an abbreviation of De-Hydro-Epi-Androsterone. It is primarily produced by the adrenal glands located on top of the kidneys. Smaller amounts are made in the testicles, and by the ovaries while women ovulate.
After age 25 our bodies produce less-and-less DHEA, which coincides with less energy, loss of muscle mass, increase of body fat, and aging. As a matter of fact, our DHEA production peaks at age 25. After that our production levels drop by 20% every decade. This means that by the time we are 75-80 years old we produce less that 30% of what we used too make at 25.
Interestingly when you do a blood test the so-called Reference Range for DHEA on the test changes as we age. Scientists know that we produce less as we age; so they simply adjust the levels of the Reference Ranges to wherever they expect you to be in your current decade. This way you’ll always have the idea you’re within the Reference Range. But that is not what most people like to hear; we all want to be and stay more youthful!
Double-blind studies have shown people with M.S., Alzheimers, and those with a history of heart disease all benefited from taking DHEA as a supplement.
