Grass-Fed Dairy Products and Natural Probiotics.

Yoghurt and buttermilk are examples of fermented milk products. They contain beneficial bacteria, called probiotics, which help our intestinal health.
These bacteria transport micronutrients through the intestinal wall into the portal vein towards the liver.
There are a lot of different probiotics, called “strains”, in our intestines, and at a relatively high volume. Yoghurt and buttermilk do have these bacteria in them but both the amount, as well as the different types of probiotic strains are very low.
So, yes, it has benefits to consume them, but do it more because you like them, NOT because of their (limited amounts) of benefits. For some people the excessive mucous-forming effects are worse than the benefits of the probiotics.
If you want probiotics, buy a high-quality probiotic supplement.
The other issue regarding these dairy products:
- Get a product made from the milk of grass-fed cows;
- It should be all-natural or organic, unflavored, unsweetened, so you can add your own flavor. It is the lactose, or natural milk sugar, that promotes absorption of Calcium.
- The butter-fat in plain yoghurt is also essential for absorption of dairy calcium. I therefore do not recommend fat-free, or low-fat milk or yoghurt.
- If yoghurt or buttermilk has been heat-treated after culturing, the good bacteria are either killed or deactivated.
- When refined sugar is added it destroys the health benefits of this dairy food! Too many buttermilks and yoghurts today, even dairy-free alternatives, contain so much sugar, fructose, fresh fruit, or a combination of all three(!), that they actually become dangerous to our health.
Adjusting your tastebuds to simple and plain has nothing to do with being mundane!
