Coenzyme Q10 (CoQ10) - An Essential Nutrient For Energy
By Jacobus Hollewijn
Health Pearl # 56
Even if we are totally satisfied with our overall health, there are certain things in life that – in addition to using common sense – we all need on a daily basis.
The fat-soluble nutrient Coenzyme Q10 falls into that category!
It is present in food and available in supplement form.
First identified in 1940, Coenzyme Q10 (or CoQ10 for short) has been the subject of much research since 1957. (NIH.gov)
As I just mentioned, it is a fat-soluble nutrient derived from food and is instrumental in helping the body produce energy within every human cell. This energy is called adenosine triphosphate or ATP.
CoQ10 is so instrumental-in-fact that our bodies cannot produce energy without it! (lifeextension.com)
Foods richest in CoQ10 are organ meats, especially liver and heart from beef, pork and chicken.
Furthermore, this nutrient is found in fatty fish, such as salmon, sardines, and mackerel, nutritional oils such as olive oil, canola oil, and soybean oil, even though I’m not a big promoter for these latter two.
And, Coenzyme Q10 is present in egg yolks, pistachios, sesame seeds, and peanuts.
As we age, our thymus gradually shrinks, which seems to reduce the body’s ability to assimilate and synthesize sufficient CoQ10 from the food that we eat. Because even a slight deficiency can open the door to serious illness, it is absolutely crucial to take some Coenzyme Q10 in dietary supplement form daily!
Dr. Julian Whitaker, a well-respected medical doctor, recommends 30 to 50 mg once a day for healthy people and 180 to 360 mg per day for each of his patients with cardiovascular disease.
