Glucosamine For Arthritis

The supplement Glucosamine has been in the news since 1996 when a book was written by Dr. Jason Theodosakis called “The Arthritis Cure.”
Its content was focused primarily on Osteoarthritis.
Glucosamine showed to have greater pain relieving effects long term than Aspirin and other Non-Steroidal Anti-Inflammatory Drugs.
Where Aspirin and NSAID’s produce an immediate relief in pain, Glucosamine helps to r-e-b-u-i-l-d cartilage over time.
Dr. Theodosakis explained when Glucosamine was taken at a minimum of 1500 milligrams daily, both pain relief and cartilage regrowth would kick in after about 2 weeks, but significant relief would take about four weeks. And longer use showed even better results.
The form of glucosamine used in the successful research was Glucosamine Sulfate. Since the book was published scientists have also worked with Glucosamine Hydrochloride. Apparently, both forms work about the same. Glucosamine Hydrochloride is a little cheaper, has less sodium, and even comes in a vegetarian supplement form.
Though Glucosamine is composed of an amino group bound to glucose it is perfectly safe for diabetics.
- First of all, glucosamine is absorbed intact.
- Second, even if 100% of it were broken down into pure glucose, the suggested amount of 1500 mg daily would not affect blood sugar levels. 1500 mg of glucose is equal to only 6 calories!
Glucosamine is extremely well tolerated with almost no side effects. People with peptic ulcers may notice some stomach irritation, but taking Glucosamine with food can usually eliminate this!
